August 7, 2019

Time has flown! Believe it or not, it's already August! Not only that, summer break is almost over which means school will be starting up soon again. But don't be fooled, the Texas heat is not over! In fact, that's what we will be talking about most today. We will talk about the raging heat and also about how some of you got Lucky.... This Weekly update should be a good one. We've got all of your favorites like the weekly forecast and future weather but we also have some viewer requested questions too! This should be fun, so let's dive in:

Extreme Heat Discussion:

Hot, Humid, Sunny, Dry. That's basically a week forecast all wrapped up into four words. Anyway, here's the deal. We are most likely going to see 5 straight days of 100+ Temperatures. Because of that, a heat advisory has been issued for much of Texas and other states until Thursday 7:00 PM.

Radar Scope Model

The reason why its so hot is because a low pressure system moved in right over North Texas yesterday which contained a heat core.

One thing I found interesting was that we have only had one day of triple digits! Isn't that amazing?

Check out this Facebook post by Meteorologist Pete Delkus about it.

Crazy huh? The heat is yet to come, but we should be thankful it has spared us this long! Remember to drink lots of water and be aware of heat advisories and understand the risks the heat can cause. Don't leave your pets outside too long either! Now that we've talked about the heat, let's talk about the activity with all the sea storms! There are actually 5 areas of concern. Two areas are already tropical storms which are moving towards Hawaii and may hit or affect Hawaii in some way, and two other storm could fire up and turn into a tropical depression and move into warmer waters by the US. Here's another post from Meteorologist Pete Delkus on these sea storms.

I’d love to learn more about mammatus clouds :-).

Answer: Mammatus clouds are pouch-like protrusions hanging from the undersides of clouds, usually from intense thunderstorm but other types of clouds as well. They are made primarily of ice, and are formed when warm air is forced to sink because of a thick sheet of cold air sinking down on the tops of clouds. These cloud pouches can extend hundreds of miles in any direction, and are visible in your sky for 10 or 15 minutes at a time before disappearing.

I would like to learn more about lightning. Does it start from the clouds or the ground? Does all lightning occur below the clouds?

Answer: Lightning is a giant spark of electricity. Lightning doesn't always form in thunderstorms. It can form in Volcanic eruptions, intense forest fires, nuclear detentions, and Blizzards. Some times, but EXTREMELY rare, a clear sky! (Also known as ball lightning). The most common types of lightning are cloud flashes which is when lightning travels from cloud to cloud. It is so frequent in some thunderstorms that the human eye may not even catch it. Lightning starts from the cloud and moves toward the ground but as it nears the ground, it connects to another bolt forming a lightning strike. So the answer is both. To check out more, click here. Also, check out the slow-mo video of lightning under the videos tab.

I hear that the Arctic is getting warmer and losing ice but Antarctica is gaining ice and getting colder. Does this polarization have any affect on our weather in the United States?

Answer: Yes, in a way. Air masses can change the path of Jet streams. Jet streams are channels of fast moving air in the atmosphere that can carry pressure systems and air masses with them. The affect that the Arctic is having is more than Antarctica.
